Work to replace a weir and footbridge in Surrey is due to start and is expected to run throughout the summer and autumn.

The National Trust said the work at Millbrook weir in Guildford would start "in the coming weeks", but an exact date was not confirmed.

The bridge design will be a like-for-like replacement of the original, which collapsed in 2019, underpinned with a new weir structure.

"Our team are delighted to be embarking on the next stage of this important project, which will restore the towpath and navigation to full working order, reopening riverside walking access from Guildford to Godalming," the National Trust said.

Throughout the works, the construction company will be working behind a temporary structure to drain the weir, which will not affect the main stream, the National Trust explained.

It will remain open as usual, with only short safety closures for specific activities, including when materials are being craned over the water.

'Support and dedication'

A National Trust spokesperson said there was a "narrow three-month window of opportunity to complete the works" due to a period of low water levels.

Contractors were setting up at the Millbrook council car park off the A281, but the National Trust said it was hoping to keep disruptions to a minimum.

"We understand how much Millmead bridge means to people locally and we appreciate their patience, support and dedication over the last few years," it added.

The Tumbling Bay Weir Bridge dated back to the 1900s but washed away in November 2019 after a period of high water.

The National Trust took over responsibility for repairing the bridge in November 2023.

Funding to repair the bridge was secured in January 2025.
