The fire was in a derelict building, crews said

Four kittens were rescued by firefighters after a large blaze ripped through a derelict building.

Crews remained at the scene on Saturday morning to inspect the site after a fire broke out on High Street, Tunstall in Stoke-on-Trent, at 05:15 BST on Friday.

An investigation into the cause of the fire would take place in due course, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

High Street and Roundwell Street were closed due to the fire at the time of the incident, police confirmed.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council said its experts have assessed the damage to the building and confirmed parts of it would need to be demolished to make it secure.

The two roads would remain closed until further notice while the work was carried out, the authority added.
