Weekend and overnight closures for major roadworks
BBCOvernight and weekend road closures will be in place in the coming weeks as a major roadworks project continues.
Work will be carried out on the A66 between Rheged, Penrith and Brougham as part of the National Highways Northern Trans-Pennine project.
The latest phase of the project will include vegetation clearance, strengthening the central reservation and installing new drainage, and is expected to be completed by the end of November.
Work at the Kemplay Bank Roundabout area of Penrith is due to begin on 12 October, with overnight closures in both directions between the roundabout and Temple Sowerby.
Full details of the upcoming closures between Kemplay Bank Roundabout and Temple Sowerby:
- 12 to 14 October: Overnight closures in both directions, 00:00 to 06:00 BST
- 16 to 19 October: Weekend lane closures in both directions
- 23 to 26 October: Weekend lane closures in both directions
- 30 October to 2 November: Weekend lane closures in both directions
- 6 to 9 November: Weekend lane closures in both directions
During the weekend works, lane closures will be in place from 19:00 Friday until 06:00 Monday, between Kemplay Bank roundabout and Brougham.
The A66 westbound carriageway between Brougham and Kemplay Bank roundabout has already been reduced to one lane to allow work on the central reservation and drainage to take place.
Vegetation clearance will continue across the project until 30 November 2026.
National Highways said the majority of works will be carried out overnight to reduce impact to road users, and has advised motorists to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.
