Volunteers revamp railway station's green space
Avanti West CoastLocal volunteers have revamped a green space at a railway station.
A herb-themed garden has been installed in the space at Penrith station, as part of a joint project by Penrith Community Gardeners and Avanti West Coast, which manages the station.
Funding for the improvements was raised through the station's seed donation point, which encourages people to give unwanted seeds, seedlings and plants a new home.
The updated picnic area was officially unveiled by Val Bowen, chair of Penrith Town Council and Mayor of Penrith, who said it was a "colourful and welcoming first impression" for people arriving in the town.
Bowen said: "The group's volunteers give so much of their time and energy to caring for this important space, creating a colourful and welcoming first impression for people arriving in Penrith. My heartfelt thanks go to everyone involved for their continued dedication and for making this area somewhere residents, visitors and passengers can enjoy."
The green area on platform two features a selection of herbs including rosemary, sage, and thyme.
The station's seed donation point was launched four years ago, allowing gardeners to collect items for a small donation.
It has since raised more than £2,500 for Penrith Community Gardeners, helping to fund the maintenance of planters and displays at the station.
Joan Robinson from Penrith Community Gardeners said: "We want to create a friendly, welcoming space as well as encouraging people to grow for themselves."
Mark Green, station manager at Penrith, said: "The new picnic area is a great addition to the station, and we hope it will be enjoyed by customers and residents alike while inspiring others to grow their own produce."
Work is currently under way to create a red deer-themed garden on platform one in honour of one of the Lake District's most recognisable animals.
