A man in his 60s is in a critical condition after he was stabbed on a golf course.

Police said they were called to Newport Road in Stafford, at about 19:00 BST on Thursday.

The man was walking on a public footpath through the golf course in the Castlefields area of the town, when he was approached from behind, they said.

He was found on a bench by a member of the public who raised the alarm and the victim was taken to hospital.

His condition was described as "critical but stable" by Staffordshire Police on Friday morning.

The attacker was described as being in his mid-to-late-20s, of an average build, wearing dark clothing. He might be of Eastern European descent, police said.

Officers added there would be a large police presence in the area as they carried out inquiries.

Ch Insp Saqib Butt told the BBC: "We understand this incident will cause concern within the local community.

"I want to reassure residents that we are doing everything we can to identify and apprehend the person responsible.

"He remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition, where he is receiving specialist care.

"We are maintaining a significant police presence in the area today while our investigation continues at pace."
