Construction work begins on new Lidl store

Work has started on a new Lidl supermarket and new homes on the site of a former abattoir and meat wholesalers in Wolverhampton.

The supermarket giant announced in 2025 its plans to develop the former FA Gills site off Parkfield Road which ceased trading and closed in 2023.

Up to 40 jobs would be created as part of the plans, which were approved in October, and would also see 17 new homes being built, Lidl said.

The store is part of a wider £600m national expansion plan by the chain which says plans have also been submitted for another new store on nearby Penn Road in the city.

The Parkfield Road supermarket will have 110 customer parking spaces with accessible and parent and child bays, electric vehicle chargers and cycle parking.

Joe Caunt, regional head of property at Lidl GB, said: "We are absolutely thrilled to have successfully completed the demolition of the old abattoir buildings, and now look forward to commencing the construction phase of a new Lidl store.

"This state-of-the-art store will create jobs, breathe life into an under-utilised piece of land, and enhance local access to our quality, affordable offering."
