Next phase of 2,400-home estate plan approved
Getty ImagesThe next phase of a plan to build 2,400 homes in Coventry has been approved by the city council.
Proposals for phase five of the development, submitted by housebuilders Vistry South West Midlands, see 344 homes being built on a site spread across several fields at Eastern Green, south of the A45.
The plans were initially met with concerns from neighbours over the inclusion of social housing on land at the back of existing homes.
Within phase five, 86 of the new properties will be affordable housing in a mix of one, two, three and four bedrooms to meet requirements.
The overall development was given outline planning permission in 2021 and includes 2,400 homes, with some designated as assisted living accommodation where on-site support is available around the clock for older residents.
Also part of that plan is new vehicle access from the A45 and via Pickford Green Lane, plus 15 hectares of employment land, a new district centre of shops, a local centre of smaller convenience stores and community facilities, a primary school and open green spaces.
A separate application that will provide 14 industrial units has also been approved.
Objections have been raised to the housing development, fearing an increase in traffic and noise and saying the total number of homes should be reduced by half.
GoogleAddressing complaints from people already living near the site, planning officers said: "The objections received to the development were about the positioning of the affordable housing and that there was too much affordable housing which would make the area less safe.
"These comments show prejudice towards social housing and those that live within, so are not being taken as a material planning consideration."
