The arrests came during a crackdown on driving offences in Colchester

A drug-driver was arrested twice in one day after getting behind the wheel shortly after being released from custody.

Officers detained the culprit after they failed a roadside drugs test in Colchester on Friday.

They were left gobsmacked when they caught them driving under the influence again later that day.

"Drug-driving is completely unacceptable and puts lives at risk," an Essex Police spokesman said.

Officers were carrying out a day of targeted drink and drug-driving enforcement when they caught the unnamed offender.

They also clocked a motorist travelling at 103mph (165km/h) in a 40mph (64km/h) zone.

Another driver was arrested while using an unregistered vehicle, having told officers he was "chancing his arm".

The operation resulted in 18 drivers being arrested, 440 speeding offences detected and the seizure of nine vehicles.
