Boy was 'alone and unarmed' when fatally stabbed

A teenage boy was "alone and unarmed" before he died in a "senseless" knife attack, a court has been told.

Shayne Hambakachere, 16, from Chippenham in Wiltshire, died in hospital after he was stabbed in January.

A 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, denied murder when he appeared at Bristol Crown Court earlier. The prosecution said he launched an "onslaught" attack on Shayne.

The trial was told that the accused filmed the attack and footage was shown to the jury which showed Shayne trying to escape when he saw the knife.

Sarah Jones KC, for the prosecution, told the court there had been "some tension" between the teenagers before the altercation on London Road at 16:00 GMT on 31 January.

She said Shayne was "alone and unarmed" when he met up with the other 16-year-old boy.

Jones said Shayne had been "seeking a confrontation" with the accused who he claimed had stolen his knife and weed.

The court heard Shayne had gone to the other boy's home to discuss this.

The prosecution said the full extent of what happened would never be known because "Shayne is not here to tell you [the jury] how he and [the accused] fell out".

The court heard a neighbour had seen the pair walking into a nearby alley.

"Moments later, Shayne was fatally stabbed," Jones said.

"CCTV captured Shayne emerging from the alleyway at 15.15 GMT, between 105 and 107 London Road."

Shayne then sent a message to a friend to say he had been stabbed and he staggered into the road, the prosecution said.

Two couples stopped to provide help and call 999.

Jones said: "Shayne managed to get up but collapsed again, saying 'I've been stabbed.'

"He was gasping for breath and clearly in a desperate state."

The court was told that Shayne "gasped out" the name of the accused to police at the scene as they waited for an air ambulance.

"That was one of the last things he was able to say," Jones said.

Shayne was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead at 21:37 GMT the following day.

It was found the cause of death was a single stab wound to the left side of his chest which reached his heart.

Jones said the accused launched an "onslaught" in the alley and "brandished" a knife at Shayne after swearing at him.

The attack was filmed on his own phone, the court heard.

The footage showed Shayne, dressed in red trousers, a hat and a black jacket, rounding a corner into the alley.

Upon seeing the brandished knife, he stepped backwards quickly and tried to escape before he was stabbed and shouted out in pain.

Shayne attended Hardenhuish School in Chippenham and worked at Fay's Bistro in Calne.

Its owner Fay Stallen previously said she was in "utter disbelief" at his death.

Floral tributes were placed outside the school gates after Shayne's death.
