The Right Reverend Bill Ind was the 14th Bishop of Truro

Tributes have been paid to a "legend of the Diocese of Truro" who has died aged 84.

The 14th Bishop of Truro, Bill Ind, led the diocese from 1997 to 2008, before his retirement.

Paying tribute to Ind, leaders a the Diocese of Truro said he would be "fondly remembered by many", and a former colleague described him as a legend among the community.

David Williams, the current Bishop of Truro, said Ind's "ability to connect and to exercise servant leadership characterised his whole life".

Ind was ordained in 1966 and prior to his arrival in Cornwall, he worked in various roles in Lincolnshire, London and Winchester.

The Diocese of Truro said during his 11-year tenure, he was awarded the Trelawny Plate, an accolade given to those seen to have made an outstanding contribution to Cornish life.

The Right Reverend Philip Mounstephen, the 16th Bishop of Truro, said: "Bishop Bill was something of a legend in the Diocese of Truro, well known for his sympathetic, down-to-earth manner, which resonated so well with the people of Cornwall.

"His were very good footsteps in which to follow and I'm honoured that for a season I was called to do so."
