If approved, the council would seek views on the future of care homes and day services

A potential consultation on adult social care could see some services decommissioned, a council says.

West Northamptonshire Council's cabinet will meet next week to consider seeking views on services including some care homes and day centres.

The report to cabinet states the consultation will explore a range of options, including service remodelling, alternative delivery models, and potential decommissioning.

Laura Couse, Reform UK's cabinet member for adult care and public health, said: "This is an early stage in the process, where no decisions have been made on the future of these services."

The proposal is for a 12-week consultation, beginning later in June, with a report to go back to cabinet in October following the conclusion of the consultation.

The in-house adult social care services include:

  • Obelisk House care home, Northampton
  • Southfields care home, Northampton
  • Eleanor Lodge supported living service and day services, Northampton
  • Olympus House day services, Northampton
  • The Cottages day services, Northampton
  • Towcester Forum day services
  • Longlands day services, Daventry

Couse said: "These plans to consult are so important and would enable us to hear directly from people who use these services, their families, carers and staff, so we can listen and learn."

Legal duty

The report states the council is failing to meet its duties for all residents in a timely way.

This was initially reported on the authority's strategic risk register in January.

Councils have a legal duty to make sure care is available for people who are unable to do certain things in their daily lives - getting themselves up and dressed, cooking or taking medication for example - without help.

That includes older people and anyone with a disability or condition that makes these things difficult.

It is one of the biggest challenges facing councils across the country which have been spending a large proportion of their budgets on social care.
