Two broken-down trains, a points failure and planned engineering works are causing disruption and delays to rail services across the East of England.

National Rail said there had been disruption to Greater Anglia, Great Northern, East Midlands, and London Northwestern Railway services affecting Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

It comes as buses have replaced trains between Ipswich and Norwich, as well as Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds, over the weekend for planned engineering works.

The works had been criticised for being scheduled on the same day as the East Anglian derby between Norwich and Ipswich at Carrow Road.

East Midlands Railway services have also been disrupted

Earlier on Saturday, a points failure between Ely and King's Lynn caused disruption to services but the line has since reopened.

National Rail said while services recovered, trains running between Downham Market and King's Lynn may still be revised.

Greater Anglia services between Peterborough, Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds were delayed earlier due to a broken-down freight train at Bury St Edmunds.

It said until the service recovered, trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 25 minutes or revised, until about 11:00 BST.

A broken-down train at Market Harborough is disrupting East Midlands Railway services running between Kettering and Leicester.

They were expected to get back to normal by 12:00 but trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes, revised or diverted, the company added.

London Northwestern Railway services on the Marston Vale Line were also being disrupted due to a fault on a train between Bedford and Bletchley.

The operator said fewer trains were able to run until the end of the day, and trains might also be cancelled.
