Plans made for two new homeless sleeping pods

A charity has announced its plans to install two more emergency sleeping pods for people experiencing homelessness.

Caritas said the two additional pods would be located in St Peter Port, between the Queen Elizabeth II Marina and La Salerie car park, subject to planning approval.

The charity said the new pods would complement two emergency pods that were installed at the Vale Douzaine Rooms in December 2025.

Graham Merfield, chair of Caritas, said: "The pods are not a solution to homelessness in themselves, but they provide an immediate, safe and dignified place to stay while people work towards finding more permanent accommodation."

The charity said the pods at the Vale Douzaine Rooms had given 100 nights of accommodation to people who had no alternative place to stay to them.

Caritas said the new pods were based on the same designed as the previous ones and would be self-contained units with solar power, battery storage and their own toilet facilities.

Merfield said: "The demand for the sleeping pods has varied considerably during the first half of this year, and we have often found ourselves with a waiting list of people who need somewhere safe to sleep.

"Our aim is to ensure that anyone who needs to use an emergency sleeping pod has access to one when they need it."

He added: "The additional pods will give us greater capacity and provide an alternative location to complement the existing facility at the Vale."
