A road in a Lincolnshire village has finally reopened after a 10-year battle to repair a sinkhole which kept reappearing.

The latest round of repair work started on the site on Enterprise Way in Pinchbeck near Spalding in June.

Ashley Behan, traffic manager at Lincolnshire County Council, said the authority had worked with Anglian Water "to fully investigate the root causes rather than simply carry out another short-term repair".

"These works have gone on for longer than anyone would have wanted and I'd like to apologise for the disruption caused, particularly to local businesses and residents," he said, adding the council was "now confident the underlying issues have been addressed".

Behan said: "The works have been complex, involving significant excavation and repairs to both highway drainage and Anglian Water's water recycling infrastructure."

He said the water company would be responsible for maintaining the repairs for the next three years.

An Anglian Water spokesperson said the company was pleased the road had reopened.

"We would like to thank the residents and businesses of Spalding for their patience and understanding while we completed these essential works," they added.
