New Battersea Power Station masterplan unveiled
Studio Egret WestFresh proposals have been submitted for the second half of the Battersea Power Station regeneration project, updating a masterplan that is more than 15 years old.
The new planning application, submitted by the Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC) to Wandsworth Council, outlines up to 3.2 million sq ft (297,000 sq m) of residential, commercial and leisure space.
Developers say the revised scheme reflects shifts in how people live, work and spend their leisure time, accelerated by events such as the Covid-19 pandemic.
If approved, it will nearly double the scale of development delivered so far.
Architects Studio Egret West have reworked the original blueprint for the remaining 16 acres (6.5 hectares) of the 42 acre (17 hectare) riverside site.
The revised layout breaks the remaining phases down into clusters of smaller buildings intended to make the neighbourhood feel more open and integrated with the surrounding Nine Elms area.
The plans also include a new cultural venue provisionally titled the Third Generator.
Inspired by the power station's historic turbine halls, the space aims to blend "arts, music, fashion, food, education and sport".
A denser network of streets, courtyards and pedestrian passages is also incorporated in the plans.
Studio Egret WestNew sightlines have been designed to preserve views of the Grade II-listed power station and link Nine Elms Lane directly to Nine Elms Park.
Additionally, a climate-resilient planting strategy will introduce species such as lavender across the site, developers say.
James Saunders, chief executive of BPSDC, said: "The last decade has seen events like Covid-19 and digital integration into everyday life blur the boundaries between work, living and leisure time, all fundamentally changing how we interact with cities.
"From green spaces to expanding London's cultural scene, championing business innovation, creating new homes and delivering thousands of new jobs, our proposals for the next chapter of Battersea Power Station will build upon our existing successes and create a future-proofed neighbourhood that London can be proud of."

Separately, work has begun on Prospect Place South to deliver about 300 homes, 65,000 sq ft (6,039 sq m) of commercial space and a community hub, which will complete the pedestrianised high street, Electric Boulevard.
Wandsworth Council is due to publish the application documents on its website before making a decision on the proposals in due course.
