A fire in Wolverhampton on Saturday which caused a thick column of smoke that could be seen for miles away is being treated as arson, police have confirmed.

West Midlands Fire Service sent six crews to a property on Paget Road at about 15:12 BST following reports of heavy smoke, prompting warnings to avoid the area.

Police said they were now carrying out an investigation to establish the details and identify those responsible, and confirmed no injuries had been reported.

Images shared on social media showed the smoke was visible as far away as Stourbridge and Much Wenlock, Shropshire.

The West Midlands force asked anyone with information about the blaze to contact it via its website or on 101.
