Firefighters have rescued two window cleaners who became stranded after their suspended cradle malfunctioned on the 15th storey of a London skyscraper.

The men were working on One Blackfriars in Blackfriars Road, Southwark on Thursday evening, London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.

The service was called shortly before 17:30 BST and used 209 ft (64m) turntable ladder to bring the pair down to safety, within 45 minutes.

The LFB said no-one was hurt, adding: "This is a great example of how the brigade uses its specialist equipment to meet the challenges of London's built environment."

The fire service added: "It is vital that we continue to have the right equipment to enable us to respond effectively and keep London's communities safe."

The ladder used to rescue the pair is the tallest aerial appliance in Europe and can reach heights of up to 20 floors.

It is also used to fight fires at height and as an aerial viewing platform.

One Blackfriars is a mixed-use development, which sits at around 558 ft (170m) tall and overlooks the River Thames.
