Orchestra named Brighton Dome's resident ensemble

One of Brighton's best-known arts venues has cemented a partnership with a local orchestra that dates back for 100 years.

Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1925, is to become the resident orchestra at Brighton Dome.

The orchestra first played at Brighton Dome's Concert Hall in 1928 and has been a regular part of its programme ever since.

Joanna MacGregor, chief executive and music director of the orchestra, said the move recognised the ensemble's contribution to the city's cultural life over the past century.

"We're looking forward to developing ambitious, world-class programmes and exciting artistic collaborations for Brighton audiences," she said.

Lucy Davies, chief executive and director of Brighton Dome, said the appointment celebrated "the power and endurance of the city's creative collaborations".

The orchestra celebrated its centenary last year and had composers and performers including Sergei Rachmaninoff, Yehudi Menuhin, Sir Simon Rattle and Evelyn Glennie associated with its history.

A spokesperson for Brighton Dome says its new season is due to start on 27 September.

It will feature feature works by Rachmaninoff, George Gershwin, Astor Piazzolla and Leos Janacek.
