Windows smashed and vehicle damaged at Seigneurie

A manor has been targeted by vandals with windows and path lights broken and a tractor tampered with.

Sark Seigneur Christopher Beaumont said the damage at La Seigneurie House and Gardens on the Channel Island was discovered on Sunday and he believes the damage was caused in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The Seigneurie is the historic manor house and estate of the Seigneur of Sark, the island's traditional hereditary leader.

Beaumont said path lights had been broken, stones had been thrown through two windows in the Victorian drawing room and a tractor had been damaged after cables were ripped from the alternator, the fuel tank was contaminated and a tyre was let down.

A fountain was also filled with washing up liquid, leaving it overflowing with bubbles.

Beaumont said the damage had been reported to police and it would take some time to fix the tractor and get replacement glass delivered.

He said it "gives you a sense of unease" that people could "misbehave" like this.

Beaumont added people on Sark do not normally lock their doors: "I don't want to live in a society where you can't do that anymore.

"It's one of the beauties of Sark - it's virtually crime free."

Sark Police have been contacted for comment.

Beaumont said other incidents had been reported elsewhere on the island at around the same time.

"Not the sort of behaviour we expect to encounter over here. Someone has let themselves down badly," he said.
