Call to allow tractor transport service for event

A temporary public transport service could run in Sark to support a motorbike trials event taking place next month.

Sark in the Channel Islands is one of the few places in the world where cars are banned, with motor vehicles limited to quad bikes, tractors, mobility scooters and electric bikes.

The only public transport for hire is a tractor that carries visitors up and down Harbour Hill, but the trials event set for 10 and 11 October requires bikes and riders to be transported between various stages.

The island's Douzaine has asked Chief Pleas to approve a public transport service for the duration of the event and said it was considering further changes to the law to make the system easier.

The proposal put forward by Mike Locke, Chair of the Douzaine, said: "Special events, particularly in the shoulder months, bring visitors to the island and should be welcomed, encouraged and facilitated wherever possible."

It said Sark's road traffic laws only permitted one passenger to be carried on a tractor and the "only plausible exemption" was to allow the transport of multiple riders and their bikes by tractor and trailer.

It is due to be considered by Chief Pleas next week.
