Plans to build 71 homes on a former steelworks site have been met with concerns over risks to public health.

Developer Project Genesis has applied to Durham County Council to build on the former Consett Steel Works site off Duchy Close.

Similar plans by the same firm were rejected by the council in 2024 amid concerns it would exacerbate issues with the local road network and safety, but Project Genesis said its amended project had "no adverse impact" on the area.

Reform councillor Jackie Teasdale said she was concerned about the "contaminated land", a worry also raised by residents objecting to the previous plans.

Teasdale said: "Without a comprehensive and transparent investigation, there is a risk to public health and long-term safety.

"It is essential that any contamination is properly assessed and managed with appropriate safeguards in place."

She added she was concerned about the "detrimental effect" the development would have on the quality of life of residents.

Project Genesis said the plan was intended to complete the sixth and final phase of the Regents Park development, delivering the planned 480 homes at the site, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

In documents submitted to the Reform-led council, the company said 10% of homes would be affordable and 18% would be bungalows, delivering "much-needed" housing in Consett.

It added: "The proposed development will have no adverse impact that would significantly and demonstrably outweigh the benefits of the development."

The 8.8 hectare site formed part of the Consett Steel Works which closed in 1980.
