A 65-year-old woman has died and two other people have been taken to hospital after a crash on a country road in the south of Scotland.

Police were called to the collision, which involved a Volkswagen Golf and a Suzuki S-Cross, on the A714 near Newton Stewart at about 09:35.

The woman, who was a passenger in the Suzuki, died at the scene.

Officers said the 72-year-old male driver of the Suzuki was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. The 34-year-old female Golf driver was taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

The road was closed for investigations and has since reopened.

Sgt Lindsey Tait said: "Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who has died at what is a very difficult time.

"Our inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances, and we are asking anyone who saw what happened to get in touch."
