A walker has died after falling from a Lake District mountain ridge.

The man, in his 40s, had slipped and "taken a long fall" while traversing Blencathra's Sharp Edge in Cumbria on Thursday at about 14:00 BST, Cumbria Police and Keswick Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) said.

A helicopter was deployed in co-ordination with the North West Ambulance Service and the man was located on the mountainside, but could not be resuscitated, KMRT said.

Sharp Edge is classed as grade I in the UK climbing system, but rain and wind transforms it from a "route that most hill walkers with a head for heights can tackle, to a slippery, scaly beast of a scramble", according to the British Mountaineering Council.

The ridge leads to Blencathra's summit at 845m (2,772ft) and is a popular route in the Lake District.

The death is not being treated as suspicious, the force said.
