Police officers have been attacked during disorder in west Belfast on Monday night.

Police had responded to reports that large crowds of people and vehicles had gathered and were driving dangerously in the Blacks Road, Bell Steele Road and Dairy Farm areas.

Officers were attacked by young people throwing bottles and masonry.

Politicians condemned the disorder, which they described as disgraceful.

Police said two officers were struck and number of police vehicles were damaged.

"I would appeal to those people involved in this kind of reckless behaviour on our roads to think about the possible serious consequence of their actions," Ch Insp George said.

"Not only does this kind of activity impact on the lives of local residents, but it can present a significant danger to other road users."

The officer said "an evidence-gathering operation was in place and an investigation is now under way to identify those involved in disorder".

'Absolutely chaotic'

Sinn Féin assembly member Danny Baker said dozens of cars and hundreds of young people gathered on the Stewartstown Road "for a so-called meet-up".

"The scenes in the Colin area were absolutely chaotic and nothing short of a disgrace," he said.

"Lives were put at risk as cars freely spun around the road and motorbikes sped up and down.

"I strongly condemn those involved."

Independent Belfast city councillor Paul Doherty said the scenes were "disgraceful, dangerous and totally unacceptable".

"People are putting lives at risk and terrorising the local community," he said.
