A man previously charged with grievous bodily harm over a man's death in Barnsley has now been charged with murder, police have said.

Russell Baxter, 41, was found with multiple injuries at a property on Wingfield Road on 3 September and pronounced dead at the scene.

Phillip Benson, 57, from Athersley, was previously charged with Section 18 grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent and perverting the course of justice in connection with Baxter's death.

Earlier, a South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said the GBH charge had been replaced with a murder charge after "extensive consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service".

Benson is due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday, the force added.

The spokesperson said Baxter's family continued to be supported by family liason officers and appealed to anyone with information about his death to get in touch.
