Man charged after anti-migrant protest

A man has been charged with violent disorder following an anti-migrant demonstration in Portsmouth.

A large crowd of protesters gathered near Eastney Marina when a boat carrying about 120 migrants was brought ashore after crossing the Channel at nearby Eastney Beach on 6 September.

Hampshire Police said 54-year-old Nigel Wylie, from Havant, had been charged with violent disorder.

Wylie appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court on Saturday for an initial hearing and has been remanded into custody until he returns to court on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Bradley Pinnock, of Hayling Island, and Deano Ryan, 22, of All Saints Road in Portsmouth, were both charged with violent disorder over the same incident.

Two other men - Justin Dixon, 50, from Havant and Del Somerville, 42, from Paulsgrove - previously admitted charges of violent disorder in connection with the protests at Eastney and are awaiting sentencing.
