Progress made at moorland fire with road to reopen

A major road through the Peak District shut due to a major wildfire is set to reopen after almost two weeks.

The A628 Woodhead Pass will reopen on Friday morning, said National Highways, with three sets of temporary traffic lights between Tintwistle and Crowdon.

This will allow firefighters to continue tackling the ongoing major incident on Tintwistle Moor.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said "steady progress" was continuing to be made with no visible flames currently despite hotspots in the peat.

In an update, the service said: "Steady progress continues to be made at the ongoing incident on Tintwistle Moor, thanks to the sustained efforts of all those involved in the response.

"Throughout today, firefighters and partner agencies have worked tirelessly in challenging conditions across all four sectors, moving the incident closer towards a safe conclusion.

"As referenced in yesterday's update, the weather conditions are forecast to change significantly over the coming days including a shift in wind direction and a return to very warm temperatures.

"We are maintaining a close watch on the weather conditions and assessing any potential impact they may have on the incident and our ongoing firefighting strategy."
