A man has been charged with explosives offences after police seized suspicious items during searches in west Belfast.

The searches were carried out at properties on the Shankill Road and Edwina Street on Friday and Saturday.

The suspect, who is 35, is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, accused of possessing explosives and a prohibited weapon.

Det Ch Insp McCallum of the Police Service of Northern Ireland said that residents who were moved from their homes "as a precaution" during the security operation have since been allowed to return.
