Crews tackling 'fire in the open' near village

Firefighters are tackling a "fire in the open" near a village in Derbyshire.

Five fire engines and a water carrier were deployed to Wood End Lane, near Stanton-by-Bridge, at 06:30 BST on Tuesday.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze was affecting an area measuring about 100 metres (328ft) by 400 metres (1,312ft).

It advised residents to keep windows and doors closed, and urged motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible.

Station manager Michael Haslam told the BBC: "We're dealing with a forest fire that's taken up quite a lot of resources, but the crews are working hard and we're trying to get this incident resolved as soon as possible.

"It was a running fire with visible flames, which was in the undergrowth and in the woodland.

"We're getting water on it, and we're creating fire breaks to stop it from going any further, but due to the nature of these incidents it does take a lot of time and resources to resolve them.

"The heat and the dry weather means that when one of these starts they really do kick in."

Haslam said the flames were under control and contained to the area, adding a cause has not yet been determined.

He added: "This is a great place for tourists, cyclists and people who are walking their dogs but please keep out of the smoke."
