Project to revamp busy junction completed

A major project to transform a junction in Derby to ease congestion has been completed.

Derby City Council said works at the junction of Merrill Way, Chellaston Road (A514) and Boulton Lane - which began on 5 January - had finished on time.

The authority said that as part of the upgrades, new cycle lanes and extra traffic lanes had been added.

The East Midlands Combined County Authority made £3m available to the council for the scheme, with further funding from developers Infinity Park Derby LLP, the authority added.

East Midlands Mayor Claire Ward said she was "so pleased" the works at the junction were finished.

"By easing congestion, improving active travel routes and supporting better access to places like Infinity Park, this will make Derby move more smoothly today while putting the right infrastructure in place for future jobs, homes and investment," she added.

Carmel Swan, cabinet member for climate change, transport and sustainability, said the scheme was "significant" for Chellaston and the wider city.

"Whenever we deliver these schemes, we want all road users to feel the benefits of an efficient, greener road network.

"That includes quicker bus journeys, safer crossings for cyclists and pedestrians, and fewer queues for cars," she added.
