Club unveils special shirt inspired by Syd Barrett
Charlie Gray/Cambridge United FCCambridge United FC has unveiled a special-edition fourth shirt for the season inspired by the life of Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett.
Players will wear the shirt at the U's game against Blackpool, at Cledara Abbey Stadium, on Saturday, which is also World Mental Health Day.
The club said the project was created in collaboration with the Barrett Estate and supported by Sony Music and Pink Floyd.
Rosemary Breen, Barrett's sister, said: "We are delighted and honoured to collaborate with Cambridge United on this initiative which helps highlight World Mental Health Day through the legacy of Syd."
A proportion of replica shirt sales and proceeds from an auction of those worn during the match, would go towards mental health initiatives, the club said.
Roger Barrett grew up in Cambridge and adopted the nickname "Syd" in his teens.
Soon after the band's career was taking off, Barrett's drug use and mental health issues resulted in increasingly erratic behaviour.
It led to his departure from the band and his eventual return to Cambridge. He died in 2006.
The item of clothing was produced with Umbro and Kitlocker and features a diamond pattern that represents Shine On You Crazy Diamond, a song by Pink Floyd which was written as a tribute to Barrett after his departure from the band.
Orange and blue were chosen as the colours, inspired by Barrett's solo album cover, The Madcap Laughs.
The shirt release coincides with a concert to celebrate Barrett, which will be held in his home city on 10 October, in what would have been his 80th birthday year.
Contributors including Kula Shaker and Soft Machine will be at the event at Cambridge Corn Exchange, where Barrett gave his final live performance on 24 February 1972.
