Schoolchildren name bin lorry 'Leonardo Da Binci'

Leonardo Da Binci and Bincess Peach are among the names that schoolchildren have given to a new fleet of refuse lorries in Derbyshire.

North East Derbyshire District Council said its seven new vehicles - including Bincredible Hulk and Wheely Helpful- were already out on the streets sporting their new names.

The authority said the initiative helped schoolchildren "get involved" with recycling and the environment.

Councillor Steve Pickering, cabinet member for environment said the naming contest "shows how inventive young people can be and it demonstrates they're putting thought into their work".

Pickering said the council showed children the new trucks before they came up with the names.

"The schools were really keen, and the children were really excited.

"We took a truck with us so they could have a look at it and have a play inside it and examine it before they named it.

"It makes the work they do in school fun, it encourages children to grow up thinking about recycling and the environment," Pickering said.

The council said its streetscene team and call centre staff decided the winners of the competition, which were:

• Leonardo Da Binci and Wheely Helpful - Immaculate Conception Catholic Primary School in Spinkhill
• Trash 'n' Dash - Heath Primary School in Holmewood
• The Hungry Hippo - Park House Primary School in Lower Pilsley
• Bincess Peach - St Andrew's Church of England Methodist Primary School in Dronfield
• The Bincredible Hulk and Peel Patrol - Lenthall Infant & Nursery School in Dronfield
