Old County Hall on Station Road in Truro has sat unoccupied for years

One of Cornwall's best known buildings has been sold after years of standing empty.

Old County Hall, in Truro, is Grade II listed and was once the headquarters of the now-defunct Cornwall County Council.

The granite building has been sold to a north Cornwall-based construction firm for an undisclosed sum.

The estate agent involved with the sale said it was "encouraging to see it secured by a buyer with plans to bring it forward for renovation". The new owner, Launceston-based Triple D Construction, has been contacted to ask about the company's plans.

Old County Hall was built on Station Road between 1910 and 1912 in a Neo‑Georgian style.

After the then Cornwall County Council moved into its new offices on Treyew Road in 1966, the Old County Hall site was used by the Cornwall Record Office until its relocation to Kresen Kernow, in Redruth, in 2019.

Since then the building has been bought and sold a number of times, but ambitious proposals to redevelop the site have failed to come to fruition - including proposals for a boutique hotel and spa, or student accommodation units.

Thomas Hewitt, of Miller Commercial, who handled the most recent sale, said: "Old County Hall is an iconic Truro building and it is encouraging to see it secured by a buyer with plans to bring it forward for renovation.

"The retained original features offer real character, while the extensive land to the rear, with consent already in place for additional development on part of the car park, provides further opportunity."

According to the estate agents, the property retains a wealth of original architectural features, including a grand central entrance, sash windows, a distinctive roof, and well‑preserved interior details.
