Leah Bedford: Inquest opens into death of York teenager found in river

An inquest has opened into the death of a teenager whose body was found in a river in York.

Leah Bedford, 16, went missing in September and her body was recovered from the River Ouse eight days later.

North Yorkshire Coroner's Court heard on Tuesday that she was last seen near Lendal Bridge just before 04:00 BST on 20 September.

The court was told the cause of her death was currently unknown and the inquest was adjourned to a later date.

Leah's body was recovered from the river near Terry Avenue on 28 September.

Her family have previously called for more safety measures to be installed on the waterway, including CCTV, lighting and fencing.
