Road hit by mineshaft damage reopens early

A road that was set to be closed until the end of November has reopened about two months earlier than planned.

About 150 residents of Troon, near Camborne, staged a protest in May asking Cornwall Council to fix Newton Road as soon as possible after a hole appeared due to a suspected mineshaft opening up.

The alternative route meant people had to drive a seven-mile (11.3km) diversion through Four Lanes.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service said residents were "delighted" after the road reopened on Friday.

Rachel Goodman, of Troon Residents' Action Group, said: "I have never seen so much action on the village Facebook pages, residents are truly delighted to be able to exit and access Troon without a seven-mile diversion.

"Cornwall Council Highways have really done the village proud and we are very grateful to have access restored."
