Emergency repairs are taking place on the A39 in Bridgwater

A major route has been closed after a serious gas leak has been discovered under a road, council leaders have said.

Somerset Council said the A39 Bath Road in Bridgwater has been shut between the intersection with Bailey Street and the McMillan Theatre.

Wales and West Utilities' workers are at the site to carry out emergency repairs. The road will reopen "as soon as it is safe to do so", council leaders said.

Steve Bakes, Wales & West Utilities operations manager for Bridgwater, said: "We do not yet know how long our work will take, but our engineers are working as safely and as quickly as they can to make the repair and reopen the road. There has been no impact on local gas supplies."
