Hull launches rewards app for greener travel

People in Hull could be rewarded for walking, cycling and using public transport.

Hull City Council has teamed up with BetterPoints to launch an app that allows users to log journeys without a car and earn shopping vouchers in return.

The app will also give users the chance to win prizes, including a European city break, or make charitable donations.

The council said it hoped the scheme would encourage people to become more active, make healthier travel choices and help reduce noise pollution and carbon emissions.

Shopping vouchers can be used at high street shops, local independent businesses and online retailers.

The scheme launched in East Yorkshire earlier this year.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the initiative is costing about £38,000 and is being funded through Active Travel England.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, the council's cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure, said: "You can earn rewards or support charities just by walking, cycling or using public transport whether that be for work, leisure or for trips locally."

Jack Windle, chief sustainable transport officer at BetterPoints, added: "We are thrilled to be supporting Hull City Council, who have already made great strides in their goal of reducing single-occupancy car journeys and encouraging greener and healthier travel habits.

"We look forward to rewarding Hull residents for making different travel choices and seeing the positive effect this has on the city."
