Charity seeking volunteers to maintain service

A charity needs more volunteers to maintain its service helping people who can no longer take a bath at home safely without assistance.

Guernsey Voluntary Service currently runs the bathing service four days a week but said it was at risk of dropping to two days a week due to lack of helpers.

It said the people it helped had purpose-built bathrooms with an electric chair to help them in and out of the bath which gave them "independence and a chance to maintain their dignity and wellbeing".

Mandy Le Bachelet, manager of the service, said: "Our assisted bathing service makes a huge difference to some of the most vulnerable members of our community."

Le Bachelet added: "For many clients, it is not simply about having a bath. It is about maintaining independence, confidence and quality of life.

"We urgently need people who can spare a few hours each week to help us continue supporting those who depend on this important service."

The voluntary service also runs social clubs, trolley shops, meals on wheels and blood donor services.

It said more than 40 volunteers were needed every day to keep all its services running and it also needed car and minibus drivers.

Le Bachelet added: "Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do.

" Many of our volunteers tell us they gain just as much from the experience as the people they support.

"Even a small amount of time can make a lasting difference to someone's life."
