A primary school in Leicestershire has closed after a car crashed into a tree and damaged a fence in the grounds.

The crash at Hall School in Glenfield Frith Drive, Glenfield, was reported to emergency services at about 08:10 BST on Friday.

A statement from the school said the presence of the vehicle meant children would not have been allowed outside, which was impractical on such a hot day.

Police confirmed it had been notified and there were no injuries reported and no-one was arrested.

Tim Sutcliffe, CEO of Symphony Learning Trust, which runs the 420-place school, said: "When the school was unlocked this morning, a car had been found to have left an adjacent road and crashed into a tree on school grounds.

"As recovery of the car and safety checks needed to be carried out, which would mean pupils could not be outside, we felt that keeping pupils inside all day would not be appropriate with the warm weather and therefore the decision was taken to close for today.

"The Hall will be open as usual on Monday."
