Former teacher jailed over sexual assault of boys

A former primary school teacher who sexually assaulted and falsely imprisoned two boys has been jailed for over four years.

Joseph Haffenden, 32, previously admitted sexual assault by touching after the two children reported he had tickled them under their clothing in a "game" using a feather, an electric toothbrush and his hands, Sussex Police said.

Searches of his home later uncovered items which "suggested an interest in children", following the incidents in January and February 2026.

Haffenden, of Lindfield High Street, also admitted six counts of false imprisonment, and was sentenced to 51 months in prison on 3 September.

Sussex Police Det Sgt Ellen Jones said: "Haffenden's disturbing crimes suggest a clear sexual interest in children that jar alarmingly with his position as a teacher.

"Thanks to the bravery of his victims for reporting his offending, we have been able to bring him to justice and ensure he can pose no further risk to children."

Following the allegations, Haffenden was suspended from his teaching job, and has since been dismissed.

As well as his prison sentence, Haffenden was also given an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which is intended to stop further crimes.
