A range of "weird and wonderful" items left on the Tyne and Wear Metro is being sold to raise money for charity.

The unclaimed lost property found on trains, in stations and at bus interchanges over the past year includes Christmas trees, tents and windbreakers, cuddly toys, and walking sticks.

Nexus, which operates the system, is hosting a stall at the market at Tynemouth Metro Station on Sunday.

All proceeds will go towards this year's nominated charity, Sunderland-based Dementia North East.

Lost property is held by Nexus for 28 days before being discarded, recycled or sold.

Included in the sale is brand new clothing with tags still on, sports items such as boxing gloves and badminton racquets, jewellery and umbrellas.

Lynne Robinson, public affairs manager at Nexus, said: "We have a weird and wonderful mix of items to sell and we usually get lots of interest.

"It's great to think that the unclaimed lost property can be put to such good use and the funds raised will be welcomed by North East Dementia Care."

Last year almost £7,000 was raised for James' Place, supporting men's mental health.

Previous charities to benefit include Feeding Families, the Alzheimer's Society, Great North Air Ambulance and Daft as a Brush cancer patient care.
