Major A-road to close as cranes lift in new bridge
National HighwaysA section of a major road near Norwich will be fully closed in both directions for a weekend while bridge beams are lifted in for a new link road.
The A11 will be shut between the Thickthorn roundabout, south of Norwich, and Wymondham, between 20:00 BST on Friday 18 September and 06:00 on Monday 21 September, with diversions in place.
The new bridge is part of a £200m redesign of Thickthorn and will eventually carry the Cantley Lane link road, which will connect Cantley Lane South, Cringleford, with the B1172 Hethersett Bypass.
"The bridge sections will be lifted into position using large cranes; for safety reasons, this can only be done if the A11 is closed," said National Highways.
It advised drivers to plan ahead and, if possible, avoid travelling in the area that weekend.
A11 traffic will be diverted via Thetford, Diss, and the A140 to Thickthorn, and vice-versa if heading south.
HGVs have a longer detour via the A14 at Newmarket and the A140 near Stowmarket.
Traffic marshals would be on hand to maintain access to Cantley Lane South for residents, National Highways added.
The project aims to relieve congestion and improve journey times at Thickthorn with two new free-flowing slip roads connecting the A47 with the A11.
