Demolition work at pier landing stage extended

Work to demolish a pier's landing stage is taking longer than originally planned.

A planning application was submitted to remove Gorey Pier's deteriorating historic structure last year and work that was expected to be completed before the summer season, will now finish at the end of August.

Ports of Jersey (POJ) said it was taking longer due to the challenges of the project partly in the sea and because of extreme heat reducing safe working hours.

It added "several minor design refinements" were found once works began and had been incorporated into the project.

POJ said: "Programme adjustments of this nature are not uncommon on projects of this complexity, particularly where access constraints and site conditions become clearer once works are underway.

"A number of mitigation measures have already been implemented, and the team continues to review opportunities to reduce the impact of the works while maintaining the required safety standards."

POJ thanked pier users, locals and businesses for their "continued patience and cooperation".
