A child has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car.

Thames Valley Police said it received reports of a crash involving a black Ford Fiesta and a pedestrian at a traffic light crossing near The Health Centre on Mably Way in Grove, near Wantage, Oxfordshire, at about 18:25 BST on Friday.

The pedestrian, a young child, remains in hospital, the force said and thanked people who came to their aid at the time of the crash.

A 37-year-old man, from Wantage, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving whilst unfit through drink/drugs and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Det Sgt Edward Crofts said: "Any collision involving a young person is particularly harrowing but I would like to thank those that came to the aid of victim and their family at the time of the collision.

"This included medical staff working nearby and members of the public who stopped to assist."

He said officers would like to hear from witnesses who saw the car at the time of the collision or leading up to the incident, from Didcot along the A417 and westbound towards Denchworth Road along Mably Way.
