Two firefighters injured in blaze at fire station

Two firefighters were injured in a fire that broke out at a fire station.

The blaze started at about 17:00 BST at the Castletown and Malew fire and ambulance station, near to the Isle of Man airport at Ronaldsway.

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service said the fire began in an appliance room and was discovered by a member of staff, and that at the height of the fire, nine crews and engines were tackling it.

It said the station had suffered "substantial damage" and and an investigation was ongoing into how the incident would affect the site's "operational capability".

While large plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the building, flights to and from the nearby airport did not appear to have been affected.

Fire crews brought the blaze under control

A spokesman for the fire service said: "The chief fire officer would like to reassure the public in the Castletown and Malew area that fire cover in their local area was maintained at all times throughout this incident and will continue to be maintained in the coming days and weeks.

"Fire cover offered to the airport fire and rescue service will also continue to be maintained."

The spokesman added that the two firefighters had suffered "minor injuries", and that the cause of the blaze was under investigation.
