People have been asked to share photos of their memories of Sunderland for a time-keeping piece of art.

The Timepiece installation, at the yet-to-open Culture House in Keel Square, will play a different 30 second audio-visual sequence every hour across 36 screens in the building's atrium.

One of the artists involved, Ross Millard from band The Futureheads, said it would not only tell the time but also "a little story, a little vignette of either the past, present or future of the city".

"We're keen to get selfies, photos of family moments and photos that show the diversity of the city," he said.

The 43-year-old is working with video artist and sound designer Jeremy Bradfield and creative technologist Ben Lawrence on the project.

The team had already "amassed a huge amount of assets" working with local groups like the Sunderland Antiquarians Society and Friends of Roker Pier.

Millard said: "What we feel like we're really missing at the moment are those more personal contributions, family photographs or selfies."

They planned to mark everything from the city's shipbuilding heritage, to sports teams, to the music scene.

He said they were particularly interested in pictures in front of local landmarks, people in their work uniforms, or celebrating holidays like Christmas or Eid.

"They can tell a story of that particular family's place in Sunderland, whether they were born here and they're staying here or whether they're passing through," Millard said.

The opening date for Culture House is yet to be announced but is expected later this year.
