Firefighters teach pupils life-saving safety skills

A fire service taught pupils life-saving safety skills to help boost their confidence.

Ten Year 8 students from Kingswood Secondary Academy in Corby went to the town's fire station for a three-day course.

They learnt about fire and road safety, water rescue techniques and were given first aid training.

Course leader Michelle Bates, from Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "It is great to see the students learning, improving their knowledge of risks, learning how to work as a team – all while having fun."

The Action, Reaction and Consequence (ARC) course combines practical and classroom-based learning to develop skills students can use in their daily lives.

Bates said ARC focused on engaging with young people and prioritised boosting their confidence.

Kingswood Secondary Academy said ARC encouraged resilience and teamwork among the students, as well as a sense of pride.

One of the students said: "The course was a great experience for me as the group activities were awesome.

"The things I got to learn will be beneficial if anything ever happened."
