Four residential properties damaged in large fire

Four properties in West Sussex have been seriously damaged in a large fire.

Emergency services were called to the blaze in Ash Keys, Crawley, at about 14:40 BST on Monday.

Eight fire engines are at the scene of the fire, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said.

A total of 10 properties were involved in the fire, with the blaze having also spread to the gardens of the properties., it added.

"Crews are working hard to bring the fire under control and to extinguish it," the spokesperson said.

"We urge people to avoid the area and ask that people nearby keep their doors and windows closed."

The fire service is urging the public to avoid disposable barbecues and bonfires, dispose of smoking materials safely, clear litter and report any signs of fire by calling 999.

"The Fire Severity Index remains very high in West Sussex due to the prolonged warm, dry weather," they added.
