A GP surgery and a pharmacy have been evacuated after a car crashed into a building in Hamilton.

The smash on Douglas Street was reported at about 09:10, and the road has been closed between Clydesdale Street and Almada Street.

The Scottish Ambulance Service said it treated and discharged one patient at the scene.

BBC Scotland News understands that a gas main needs to be switched off as the car hit the building near the GP surgery's boiler.

It is thought this will involve part of the car park being dug up to switch off the gas supply.

Meanwhile, the car will not be removed due to concerns around the wall collapsing.

Members of the public have been asked to avoid the area.

A spokesperson for NHS Lanarkshire said: "We are supporting the practice to put in place contingency arrangement to ensure priority patients are being offered the appropriate healthcare for their needs.

"The site is being assessed and the practice is hopeful it will be fully operational this afternoon.

"We would like to thank the staff and patients for their understanding and continued support."

A Boots spokesperson said its Douglas Street store was closed following an incident this morning.

"We are assisting the emergency services and will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so," they added.
