A dog "remarkably" survived a 120ft (37m) fall from a cliff, coastguards have said.

Swanage Coastguard worked alongside St Albans Coastguard Rescue Team after being called to help near Peveril Point in Dorset at about 18:00 GMT on Sunday.

Swanage Coastguard said: "With no exact location for Tilly, teams began searching the area and thanks to a member of the public who was flying a drone nearby, helped to locate Tilly."

The team said they located the owner and dog, who had been walking along the beach, and "safely assisted the duo back up the cliff".

Swanage Coastguard added: "Remarkably, Tilly had fallen approximately 120 feet and escaped without injury.

"It was understandably a frightening experience for the owners but this incident serves as an important reminder to keep dogs on leads when near cliff edges.

"Dogs are easily distracted by sounds and smells on a coastal walk and often they run off to chase a bird or animal not knowing they are near the edge of a cliff.

"It's safer to keep your dog on a lead when out walking along the cliff, especially if you don't know the area or are visiting."
